Hypnotherapy

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern, practical therapy in which the client is encouraged to focus on their goals and create new behaviours and ways of thinking which enhance their wellbeing.

Hypnotherapy is not a magical ‘cure’ which requires no effort on your part, but more of a collaborative process in which I will help you learn how to use your brain to your advantage.

Many of us have years of unhelpful thinking styles we need to unlearn in order to reach our full potential and the hypnotic state brings together the conscious, rational part of your brain and the unconscious, instinctive part of your brain to facilitate positive change in a completely safe and natural way.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is totally safe and there is no danger that you will get ‘stuck’.  Hypnosis induces a relaxed state which can be likened to daydreaming or the time between wakefulness and sleep.  It is a completely natural state of focused attention which you will be able to come out of by yourself or when prompted.  We all enter this hypnotic state many times throughout the day and it is when we are in this relaxed, focused state of attention that we can tune into our inner resources, come up with solutions and override resistance.

Can hypnotherapy make me do anything against my will?

No.  Contrary to popular belief and what the stage hypnotists would have us believe, hypnotherapy cannot make you do anything against your will.  You will remain in control the whole time and able to reject any suggestions if you feel they are not in your best interest.

What does it feel like to be hypnotised?

As with everything, the experience can vary from person to person, however most people find it a very relaxing, enjoyable experience which leaves them feeling positive and calm.

Hypnosis can be experienced in varying depths and some people will, often initially, just experience a feeling of relaxation.  They may not even think they have experienced hypnosis, however this state of relaxed focused attention is still hugely beneficial and can facilitate positive change.

As the treatment progresses you may find that you experience a deeper level of relaxation, which you are able to enter into more quickly.  When the brain is in this deeply relaxed state it is most receptive to positive suggestions.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Everyone has the potential to be hypnotised, and most people will experience at the very least a light trance, so can therefore benefit from hypnotherapeutic suggestions.  The hypnotic state is a totally natural state in which your brain is focused and coming up with solutions and like most things in life, the more you practice, the easier it becomes.

Will I unwittingly reveal any of my secrets?

You will not say anything which is not within your control and which you do not wish to tell me.   It is unlikely you will even say anything when under hypnosis and we all naturally go in and out of this state throughout our everyday waking life.

How long will the treatment last?

The length of treatment time varies from person to person, but as a guide you will usually start to notice changes anywhere from 3 – 12 sessions.  I usually recommend sessions take place either weekly or fortnightly to begin with as it can take the brain a few days to fully process everything from our session and momentum can be lost if sessions are too spaced out.

Specific fears and phobias can generally be treated in 3-5 weekly sessions and smoking cessation in as little as one session.

Its is important to be aware that hypnotherapy is not an overnight, miracle cure and like everything in life, the desire and motivation to change has to be there in order for change to take place.
